The Association for the Development of tree cultivation in Morocco (ADAM) predicts for this season an apple crop amounting around 320.000 tons, compared to the 380.000 tons usual average. The price will consequently rise to 2.5/3 euros/kilo, making of this fruit a “luxury” product.
Producers complain the fact that the marketing circuit affects the product by multiplying at least by five its value, adding also the pressure of big retail chains.
Since 1992, the apple cultivated surface is stable, covering between 26 and 27.000 ha, whose average output is around 15 tons per ha (reaching in some campaigns the peak of 20-25 tons).
The market is supplied with the national production and with imports proceeding mainly from USA and Chile.
Concerning cherries, this season’s production is estimated around 3.000 tons, drastically varying year by year. Prices are around 2.3 euro/kilo, growing compared to last year when average price was 1.5 euro.
