Garlic season in La Mancha promises to recoup some of the losses of recent years

The garlic season in La Mancha (Spain) is progressing with the harvesting of purple garlic, while Spring garlic has been underway for a month. According to a local grower, this season's Spring garlic stands out for its quality, although production has been limited by Penicillium and storms in Albacete.

 

This shortage has led to an increase in payment to growers, supported by the high prices of the previous season and the limited availability this year.

 

Purple garlic, also affected by Penicillium and the rains, is showing good quality and size, anticipating a positive season but with lower volumes than in previous years. The lack of stock from the previous season will push up the price of purple garlic.

 

The farmer hopes that this season will compensate for the last few years of losses for the farmers, affected by the lack of water, generational changeover and the increase in costs.
