Australia sets target to export 40% of its cherry production by 2025

For the 2020/21 season only 23% of Australian cherry production had been exported, the sector is setting itself the ambitious target of reaching 40% of national production exported by 2025.
The program will include over 50 projects and activities that will help build the export capacity of Australian producers. The support is adapted to each production region. With in particular increased activities in research and development, pest and disease management but also the establishment of training workshops and preparations for market access, as well as supports such as a help line on export.
The cherry sector is booming and needs to enter a new phase of export development, according to Australian professionals who have welcomed this initiative.
According to ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics), for the 2020/21 season the country exported around 5,000 tonnes of fresh cherries, 24% of which went to Hong Kong, the biggest market for Australian cherries. The total exported volume represented 23% of the national cherry production.
