Morocco has adopted legislation on organic products. It currenly exports 12,500 tons.
New legislation concerning organic products has been passed by Parliament and will apply soon.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the new rules are consistent with international standards and will allow the recognition of organic products in Morocco.
In the country, farming occupies an area of ??5000 hectares with a production of 50,000 tons in 2011-2012. According Amabio, the Moroccan Association for the organic sector, nearly 600,000 hectares are easily reconvertible into organic production
(400,000 ha and 200,000 argan herbs).
For 10 years, exports of organic products has experienced sustained growth: 1,000 tons in 1997/1998, 6,500 tons in 2005/2006, and a current 12,500 tons. Citrus: 1,200 tons, courgettes: 2,500 tons, tomatoes: 1,400 tons, peppers: 1,000 tons, cucumber: 1,600 tons. The rest is represented by processed products.
