In Senegal, vegetable production is still predominant and represents 83.04% of the country's total horticultural production (Photo: lejecos.com).
The increase continues for the volume of fruits and vegetables produced in Senegal. For the last campaign, the production of vegetables exceeded 1.3 million tonnes, or + 12.2% compared to the previous campaign.
According to data from the Horticultural Directorate, total fruit and vegetable production for the 2019-20 campaign reached 1,624,456 tonnes, or + 12.3% compared to 1,446,360 tonnes for the previous campaign.
Vegetables. With 1,349,019 tonnes for this 2019-20 campaign, i.e. + 12.2% compared to 1,202,288 tonnes of the previous campaign, vegetable production is still predominant and represents 83.04% of the total horticultural production of the country. Several product categories contributed to this positive variation such as cabbage (+ 80.4% with 189,618 tonnes), okra (+ 58.5% with 22,185 tonnes), carrots (+ 44% with 24,600 tonnes), potato (+ 13.5% with 158,875 tonnes), onion (+ 2.5% with 444,871 tonnes).
Fruits. Senegalese production reached 275,440 tonnes, or + 12.9% compared to 244,072 tonnes the previous season. Among the products that have contributed to this positive variation are citrus fruits and bananas. Mango production recorded a slight increase of + 1.2% with 130,000 tonnes.
