In 2010, China imported just 2 tonnes of avocados, according to data from Beijing-based consultancy Development Reimagined, but 32,140 tonnes in 2017 and 41,374 tonnes in 2021.
In China, consumers increasingly appreciate avocados, whose imported volumes are constantly increasing. From Chile, Peru, Mexico and also from Africa.
African avocado exports to China have grown and will continue to grow. After Kenya in July, Tanzania became the second African country in November to be able to export fresh avocados to China.
South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are also looking to export avocados to China. South Africa is China's supplier of fruits such as lemons, grapefruits, oranges and tangerines. Sudan and Ethiopia are also suppliers of agricultural products.
The volume of trade between China and Africa shows an imbalance in favor of China. To remedy this, President Xi Jinping promised a few months ago that China could import 300 billion USD of African agricultural products by 2025.
China wishes, in the name of food security, to strengthen its diversification policy and increase its imports from Africa. In 2021, China imported USD 5 billion worth of African agricultural products, i.e. +18% compared to 2020 according to official Chinese data. Africa accounted for only 3% of China's total agricultural imports.
