The decline in the volume of fresh fruit and vegetables exported in 2023 is attributed to several factors, such as adverse weather conditions, rising production costs and declining competitiveness vis-à-vis other countries. On the other hand, the concentration of exports in the EU highlights the importance of the European Commission's policies for the future development of the sector, which must be adapted to the production realities of the member states and promote community preference.(photo: tiempo.com)
In Spain, the export of fresh fruit and vegetables in 2023 experienced a slight decline in volume, reaching 6% less compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 11.3 million tonnes, according to data from the Customs and Excise Department.
However, the value increased by 6%, reaching 16.855 million euros. According to the same source, imports also increased by 7% in volume and 19% in value.
The decrease in exported volume was more notable in the case of fruits, registering a 7.7% decrease compared to 2022, totalling 6.2 million tonnes. Despite this, the value of fruits experienced a slight growth of 1%, amounting to 8.972 million euros. Among the fruits, citrus and red fruits showed significant drops in the volume exported, while stone fruits performed positively.
As for vegetables, exports also experienced a slight decrease of 3% compared to 2022, totalling 5.2 million tonnes. The main exported vegetables, such as pepper, lettuce, cucumber, tomato and cabbages, recorded setbacks in their exported volumes.

In terms of export destinations, most exports went to the EU, accounting for 83% of Spain's total exports in 2023. This reflects the limited presence of Spanish productions in non-EU markets, due to the difficulties of access they face.
The increase in fruit and vegetable imports into Spain in 2023 continued its upward trend, with an increase of 7% in volume and 19% in value compared to 2022. In terms of origin, Andalusia, Valencia and Murcia remain the main exporting regions, although some experienced slight decreases compared to the previous year.
