PlantLab opened its first indoor production facility in the United States
PlantLab, indoor farming pioneer that delivers fresh produce through their custom-built 'Plant Production Units', opened a new production site in Indianapolis, US. The venture was formed in partnership with Englewood Community Development Corporation, which is working to promote sustainable urban corridor development.
Michiel Peters, CEO of the company, commented this collaboration allows them to deliver more value to the people of Indianapolis. “This is also very much in line with our global mission: we not only increase the supply of sustainable and healthy fresh food for local clients but also create local jobs in a completely new sector," he added.
The company grows a variety of cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce and herbs in Indianapolis under the brand name 'Uplift, good food on purpose.' The first herbs and heads of lettuce have already been harvested at the 54,000 square feet growing site for delivery to local supermarkets and food service companies. The new location is slated to provide an annual supply of around 1,000,000 pounds of fresh vegetables and jobs for roughly 30-70 people.
Indianapolis is the first city in America where PlantLab is opening an indoor production facility - on a former battery factory near the city center. The Bahamas is a plan of the company after.
The company's production sites can be located anywhere in the world, even on barren soil or in urban areas, through optimized temperature, moisture and light regulation.
PlantLab holds patents for its indoor farming technology in 74 countries, including the United States. Its indoor farming patent covers a method used for regulate root/substrate temperature as well as evaporation and leaf temperature of crop. The company's new technology for innovative urban farming is already being rolled out at a commercial production site in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, as well as at this new location in Indianapolis (Indiana). This technology allows day-fresh vegetables to be grown on a large scale in close proximity to the consumer, in a production site no larger than two American football fields, without the use of any crop control chemicals.
Founded in 2010, Dutch-based PlantLab specializes in technologies for innovative urban farming, the sustainable food supply of the future.
