According to the General Directorate of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation (DGESEP) of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), more than 16,000 hectares of sweetpotato are cultivated in Peru, with an annual production of approximately 276,000 tonnes.
The main production areas are Lima, Ica, Ancash and Piura, where harvesting takes place throughout the year.
In recent years, sweetpotato exports have evolved, with the export of frozen prepared products standing out, reaching its maximum volume in 2021 with shipments exceeding 13,000 tonnes.
It is estimated that there are around 5,000 varieties of sweetpotato in Peru, the most popular being yellow and purple, followed by pink, white and orange varieties. Specifically in the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima (GMML), the most traded varieties are yellow and purple.
The Camotea Peru campaign
In order to highlight the nutritional and nutritional properties of sweetpotato, Midagri is about to launch the "Camotea Perú" campaign. This initiative aims to increase the consumption of this product, which in 2012 averaged 3.4 kilograms per person per year (according to INEI), with the goal of reaching 5 kilograms per capita. In this way, it is expected to increase the intake of healthy food among consumers and improve the quality of life of rural families by increasing sales of the product.
