In anticipation of an exceptional season, with national production expected to increase by + 60%, Australian avocado producers are exporting for the first time by sea freight to Asian markets.
According to information from the Australian government, exporters in the Western Australia and Queensland regions are testing the shipment of refrigerated containers of avocados to Southeast Asia and Japan. Using Controlled Atmosphere Technology to ensure fruit arrives in perfect condition after a 20-30 day journey.
These trials will allow many producers to reach international consumers and avoid crowding the Australian market, as domestic production is expected to grow by + 60%.
“This season is going to be huge - the biggest season we have ever seen. There is going to be a huge increase in volume, which is why it is so important to develop the export market” said Josh Franceschi, Director General of The Avocado Collective, a company that is one of those trying maritime transport for the first time.
