After mangoes, grapes and other fruits, Indian pomegranates will soon be arriving in Australian supermarkets for the first time. Australia has just concluded a protocol for importing fresh pomegranates from India.
"While Australia already produces pomegranates, India is well positioned, as one of the world's largest pomegranate producers, to address shortages in the Australian market," the Australian High Commissioner said in India, Barry O'Farrell.
Australia is seeing an increasing demand for pomegranates. Demand fueled by their use in restaurants and cooking shows.
In India, the state of Maharashtra is the largest producer of pomegranates with its share of 62% of the total production, followed by Gujarat (16%) and Karnataka (9%), Andhra Pradesh (5%) and Madhya Pradesh (4%).
India has already exported pomegranates to many countries for years. In addition, pomegranates and other fruits such as grapes, mangoes, bananas and oranges account for a larger share of the fruits exported by the country. The main destinations for Indian fruits and vegetables are Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Nepal, Malaysia, United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Oman and Qatar.
