GMO Field Trials Approved
Germany
Monday 07 April 2008
On April 2, 2008, the German state food safety agency approved open-air field trials of GMO sugar beet and potatoes. It has thus allowed Planta to sow 12,000 square meters GMO sugar beet at two different locations between 2008 and 2011. BASF Plant Science has been given approval to plant GMO potatoes on 30,000 square meters, on three locations, between 2008 and 2012.
This approval occurred as the agency “came to the conclusion that the open-air trials would not have any dangerous influence on humans or animals or the environment.”
However the crops may not be used for food and animal feed and they will meet various criteria to prevent the spreading of GMO to conventional crops.
