Export diversification will be the major challenge for the sector in 2017.
The volume of Spanish exports to countries outside Europe remains low and this sector of third world countries remains a major growth driver.
According to FEPEX, diversification of exports to third countries is a priority objective for the Fruits & Vegetables sector in 2017. The latest known data up to October 2016 show that shipments to third world countries accounted for only 6% of total spanish exports.
Europe remains the No. 1 destination with 12.2 million tonnes in 2015, 18% more than in 2011. The 28 EU countries received 11.9 million tonnes. After the EU, Norway and Switzerland are the main export markets in Spain.
Towards third world countries, during the full years of 2011 to 2015, shipments, although increasing in Asia (+ 199%), in Africa (+ 92%), in America (+ 69%) and in Oceania (+ 150%) represented small volumes. Thus exports to Asia in 2015 accounted for only 1% of total Spanish exports, those to Africa accounted for 1% to 2%, and those to America and Oceania were less than 1% of the total. These low volumes therefore promise a high rate of growth.
