According to Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, Germany produced 111,900 tonnes of asparagus in 2023, up 1.45% on the 110,300 tonnes produced in 2022.
German production represents a volume 5.7 times greater than asparagus imports. In 2023, Germany imported 19,300 tonnes (-2% compared to 2022) of asparagus, mainly (86%) during the period from March to June, which corresponds to the harvest period in the country.
In 2023, asparagus imported into Germany came mainly from Greece (28%), Spain (27%), Italy (18%), Mexico (9%) and Peru (7%).
In Germany, the season starts in March with low volumes from protected and/or heated crops, then volumes increase in April and May with outdoor crops, and the harvest ends in June.
