The 13th edition of Interpera, the international pear congress, has come to an end. Currently the situation of the pear sector in Europe is complex but the event has prompted producers to adopt a positive attitude.
INTERPERA took place from June 28 to 30, 2022 in Rotterdam (Netherlands). This edition was co-organized by AREFLH (Assembly of European Fruit, Vegetable and Horticultural Regions) and DPA (Dutch Produce Association). Richard Schouten, Director of DPA, expressed his pride in hosting the event for the 1st time in the Netherlands and receiving participants from 14 nationalities "such a mix proves that there is a future in the culture of pear, we are reaching an ever-increasing number of players".
Currently the situation of the pear sector in Europe is complex: production and consumption are down, exports are limited by the geopolitical situation, climate change is accelerating and costs are rising. Faced with these challenges, it was important for players in the pear sector to come together to share their experiences and consider solutions together.
The day of conferences on June 29 made it possible to present the market situation and announce the forecasts for the summer pear harvest during a round table of experts from 6 European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, France , Belgium and the Netherlands).
The presentations aimed to encourage producers to adopt a positive attitude. The idea was to propose possible alternatives, to provide perspectives in an uncertain environment. For example, participants were able to see how Italian production is reorganizing and facing market challenges. Other themes were also highlighted, such as the use of data, precision agriculture, new solutions to combat the Asian plant bug and the importance for the sector of reconnecting with consumers in order to offer novelties and innovations that can increase the consumption of pears.
