Abu Dhabi wants to triple production
FJ
Excellent prospects for the ADFSC program (Abu Dhabi Farmers' Services Centre).
ADFSC launched the third season of its "potato" program. The program aims to distribute potato seeds to growers in the country, in order to grow the local production. This year ADFSC expects to triple the quantities produced, with almost 2,500 tons expected (compared to 900 tons only, in 2012).
ADFSC distributed 231 tons of potato seeds by Safran, imported from France. Quality seeds, adequate cultivation methods, and good water management have helped to increase yields.
One of the main objectives of this program is to increase the food security of the country and make it less dependent on imports. Most of the imported potatoes in the UAE come from Egypt, Iran and Pakistan.
