Heavy rains in the Junín region of Peru are causing serious problems in the villages of Quilcatacta, Shalacancha, Puyay, Jachahuanca, Piscurruray, Yanac, Tambos, Yapacmarca and Chogoto, in the district of Ulcumayo. Here, more than 2,000 farmers face the loss of around 500 hectares of crops due to the disease known as rancha.
Rancha, or Phytophthora infestans, is a fungus that attacks mainly due to excessive humidity. This disease, also referred to by locals as black leaf spot, causes dark spots on leaves, affects stems and tubers, with symptoms of necrosis appearing 6-7 days after infection.
Faced with this scenario, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Junín (DRA Junín), through its nine agricultural agencies, is rapidly assessing the damage and providing foliar fertilisers along with technical advice. In addition, they are managing reports for the catastrophic agrarian insurance of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) in order to ensure future compensation for affected farmers.
