Turkish professionals were awaiting this decision as the limits of the previous quota had been reached even before the end of last year.
For AFFVEA (Aegean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association), the association of fresh fruit and vegetable exporters from the Aegean Sea, Russia's decision is good news for the industry. The quota will drop from 200,000 tonnes to 250,000 tonnes for fresh or chilled tomatoes, only ten days will be needed for the new Russian decree to come into force.
Last December, Turkish exporters called for the elimination of quotas because the quota limits were reached at the end of November. This removal request had the support of Turkish exporters as well as Russian importers.
In recent years Russia has been Turkey's 1st export market for tomatoes with a turnover of approximately $62.2 million in 2020.
According to TİM, the Assembly of Turkish Exporters, total tomato exports to 52 destinations in 2020 reached $314.4 million, + 3% compared to 2019. Turkey is the 4th largest producer in the world, with around 14 million tons of tomatoes produced per year.
