Tomato production has decreased over the years

The tomato is the first vegetable consumed in France but households purchases are down by 3% according to some studies.
For this 2019 season fresh tomato production was stable compared to the volume produced during the previous season, however the volume is down by 11% compared to the 2014-2018 average.
According to Agreste and its estimates as at 1 September 2019, in France the tomato area for the fresh market will reach 2,313 hectares, which is virtually stable over 1 year and compared to the 2014-2018 average.
The French fresh market production for the 2019 season is estimated at 524 878 tonnes, down by 11% from the 2014-2018 average and stable for one year.
Between January and July 2019, the foreign trade deficit (- 178,150 tonnes) for tomato (fresh and destined for industry) is reduced by 12% over one year due to the reduction in imports (325,390 tonnes ) of 5% and export growth (147 240 tonnes) of 6% year-on-year.
