Optimism for the mango sector, production and exports continue to grow.
In the Dominican Republic, the mango sector has performed remarkably well and plans to strengthen further in the future, thanks in particular to the continuation of an improvement in quality to better meet the demands of external markets.
The Ministry of Agriculture said that the country has reached 17 million kilograms of mangoes exported (in 2004 only 1 million kilos exported). The increase is remarkable in volume but also in value, exports of mangoes represented 15 million USD in 2015 and 20.1 million USD in 2016.
With the improvement of quality, the use of better processes (pre- and post-harvest) and new techniques, diversification in fruit processing, the sector expects to be able to multiply by up to 5 the mango export revenues.
The objective of the sector is for the Dominican Republic to be the first exporter of high-quality mangoes in the Caribbean (organic products, gastronomy) for the US and European markets.
