Some 1,273.88 hectares cultivated with bananas and plantains were flooded in the Tumbes region in northern Peru, as a result of heavy rains and river overflows, reports the director of the Corrales Agrarian Agency, Rosita Dios Espinoza.
Although the intensity of rainfall has decreased, the damage is extensive and the farmers ask for support of the Government to evacuate the waters that affect their plantations.
It is about the flooding of 603 hectares of conventional bananas, 507.88 of Dominican and 163 of organic.
Farmers report that papaya, lemon, corn, cocoa, and rice crops also suffered.
According to the regional director of Agriculture, Lalo Rueda, to alleviate the drains, machinery is being intervened, and if there are threats from the river or streams in the future, the water that enters the plantations can flow and not pool.
