During the first quarter of 2024, the department of Magdalena (Colombia) stood out as one of the top ten exporters of products not related to mining or energy in Colombia, with bananas as its main export product.
According to a study by the Economic Studies Office of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism (MinCIT), based on DANE data, bananas constituted 54.1% of the department's non-mining and non-energy exports, reaching a value of 97.5 million dollars. This represents a remarkable increase of 82.5% compared to the same period last year.
Magdalena was responsible for 33.7% of Colombia's total banana exports, consolidating its position as a significant player in the international arena.
Overall, Magdalena's non-mineral energy exports totalled US$189.7 million in the first three months of 2024, an overall increase of 20.8% over the same quarter of the previous year. The main markets for these products included the United States, Mexico, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Spain, with significant increases in sales compared to the previous year.
