In Thailand until now, 2 products (rice, rubber) were well ahead in the ranking in terms of export value. These 2 products are now overtaken by durian whose exports in value reached 187 trillion THB (5.3 billion USD)
According to data from the Center for International Trade Studies at the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce, last year durian exports reached THB 187 billion (USD 5.3 billion) well ahead of rice exports which reached 100 billion THB (2.8 billion USD) and rubber exports which reached 90 billion THB (2.5 billion USD).
Over the next 5 years, according to Professor Att Pisarnvanich, Thailand should maintain its position as the world's leading supplier of durians, despite competition from Malaysia and Vietnam. But the market share of Thai durian could reach only 76% while its current share is 85%.
China is the main export market. Thailand exported 875,097 tonnes of durian to China last year, worth THB 109.2 billion (USD 3.1 billion). This year, according to forecasts by the Ministry of Agriculture, durian exports to China could reach 120 billion THB (3.4 billion USD).
