Banana producers in the Canary Islands have accepted new measures from the regional government to tackle the crisis in the sector. The Association of Banana Producers' Organisations of the Canary Islands (Asprocan) approved limiting the cultivation area eligible for aid from the Community Support Programme for Agricultural Production in the Canary Islands (Posei) and freezing this area.
A production limit of 80,000 kilos per hectare will be set to prevent fraud. Farmers who diversify their crops will be able to recover Posei aid if they return to bananas.
Asprocan also proposes incentives for business concentration, covering staffing needs, and expanding markets. 2023 was a difficult year with low income and high costs. Improving the Posei financial statement from 2027 onwards is essential. Collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands and other European countries is key to overcoming the crisis and securing the future of the banana sector.
