The Guardia Civil of Huelva has launched an investigation into the illegal cultivation of 7,000 blueberry plants of the protected variety "Emerald", allegedly constituting a crime against industrial property, according to local media.
The intervention took place following a complaint lodged by a corporation and a company, holders of the cultivation rights for this variety, after discovering the unauthorised production on an agricultural estate in Cartaya, Huelva.
To corroborate the complaint, the agents carried out an inspection on the farm, taking samples of blueberry leaves at random. These samples were sent to a laboratory for genetic analysis to determine the DNA profile of the plants. The results confirmed that the cultivation was being carried out without proper authorisation from the company holding the cultivation patent, as required by the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) register.
