Sales in Japan increased by 30% in 2 seasons.
Increasing success of New Zealand kiwis in Japan where the rather aging population is increasingly concerned about health and therefore a healthy diet by privileging good quality fruits and vegetables.
ZESPRI has recorded sales up by 30% in the last 2 seasons, the Japanese market for New Zealand kiwis now amounts to NZD 500 million (323 million euros). Exports to Japan accounted for 16% of global sales.
These sales are expected to increase in the future for New Zealand kiwis. In Japan, despite overall fruit sales declining (-10% in 10 years), the aging population is, as in other similar countries, increasingly concerned about health.
Products such as kiwifruit that is perceived as a healthy food will be increasingly in demand.
