A minor market for New Zealand apples and pears, India has significantly increased its demand and this year accounts for 8.2% of New Zealand apple fruit exports
Data from the Ministry of Primary Industries indicates that last year 5.5% of apple and pear exports went to India but this year in July exports to India already accounted for 8.2%.
Efforts to increase demand in India are proving successful with orders skyrocketing, according to New Zealand professionals.
In June 2021 in a newsletter, the Ministry of Primary Industries predicted that the 2021 production of apples and pears would be 5 to 10% lower than the 2020 production. With the consequence of a drop in export earnings which are expected to be in the order of NZD 750-800 million (USD 450-480 million) by 2021, while the previous year recorded NZD 916 million (USD 549 million)
