After several years of negotiations, a protocol has been signed between Zimbabwe and China concerning exports of fresh citrus fruit to the Chinese market. These exports have now begun.
Local media report that, according to Nhamo Mudada, Director of PQSI (Plant Quarantine Services Institute), the pilot phase of citrus exports to China began in August. Oranges produced in the Beitbridge region were shipped via the port of Durban (South Africa).
According to Nhamo Mudada, phytosanitary certificates were issued for 46 containers (averaging 24 tons of oranges) bound for China. To date, 12 containers have already arrived in China and 34 are still in transit.
