Officials in Bangladesh have met with the Japanese foreign ministry in a bid to lift the export ban on mangoes.
A meeting has taken place between Bangladeshi Commercial Councellor Abul Mansur Md Faizullah and officials at the Japanese Foreign Ministry, with a view to lifting the export ban on mangoes.
Bangladeshi officials argue that their mangoes are grown in similar climate and soil conditions to Indian mangoes, which now have access to the Japanese market, reports The Daily Star.
M. Harun-ur-Rashid of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute said: "We will be able to provide guidelines on the processing of mangoes so that it can match Japanese standards."
However, Mr Faizullah warned that Japan's strict environmental and food safety policies on imported produce would make the proposal "complicated."
