Two weeks ago, the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) in Peru confirmed the presence of the Fusarium Foc R4T fungus in Piura.
On April 26, the Dominican Republic announced the suspension of banana plants from Colombia and Peru, the countries affected by the plague.
According to an official resolution of the Ministry of Agriculture, they have also banned imports of rhizomes of ginger, turmeric, and potato tubers.
The entity also reported that phytosanitary surveillance has been intensified in airports, ports, farms and border posts, as well as for all vegetative material of South American origin.
In addition, the Dominican authorities placed sanitary mats in tourist ports and passenger lounges of international airports, installed a treatment arch in the Port of Manzanillo to disinfect containers, and launched information campaigns.
The Fusarium Foc R4T pest is a fungus that causes wilting and death of banana plants.
This pest can be spread, mainly, by the movement of planting material in people's shoes, tools and vehicles, through the water that carries the fungus from one place to another.
Today, quarantine is the only preventive measure available, because there is still no chemical, genetic or biological control to reduce the pathogenic action.
