The 2022 apple and pear season is shaping up to be positive in terms of fruit volume and quality. But growers are concerned about seasonal worker shortages.
According to the Vanguard International team, the outlook for apple and pear crops in New Zealand is positive. The growing season has been good, with weather conditions favorable for optimal fruit quality. Fruit size is expected to be larger than 2021 for all varieties.
Depending on the region, pear harvest has just begun and apple harvest is expected to start in week 06 (February 7) or week 07 (February 14). Packing sites are expected to begin processing Gala in week 8 (February 21) and then significant volumes around weeks 09 (February 28) and 10 (March 7).
But growers are concerned about seasonal worker shortages due to border closures and various restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the Omicron virus.
Some companies don't have half the staff needed and are turning to the local population, arguing that there are hundreds of job opportunities right now.
