New Zealand's kiwi gold production, the star of the industry, is severely threatened by PSA disease.
In New Zealand, 43 new cases of have been discovered in the district of the Bay of Plenty. The number of infected orchards now totals 445 or 13.3% of orchards.
The situation is serious for the industry. Kiwifruit Vine Health estimated that this disease could kill gold kiwifruit industry in Te Puke area. Some producers will have no harvest next year while others will
fight until the middle of next year and decide whether to invest to try to get a crop in 2013.
Orchards of green kiwifruit seem less affected by the disease than gold kiwi. The kiwifruit industry in New Zealand puts its hopes in scientific research: a program costing millions of dollars to find a new variety of kiwifruit resistant to PSA.
