According to the latest report issued by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) on the world banana market, exports in 2021 varied by around -7% compared to 2020.
The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) has just published its study on the world banana market in 2021. According to this report, exports in 2021 totaled 20.073 million tonnes, or -7% compared to 2020.
The 'Latin America + Caribbean' region exported 16.065 million tonnes. The 'Asia' region exported 3.323 million tonnes and the 'Africa' region exported 0.684 million tonnes.
By country, Ecuador was the world's leading banana exporter in 2021 with 6.750 million tonnes shipped. Next are the Philippines with 2.529 million tonnes exported, then Costa Rica with 2.348 million tonnes, Guatemala with 2.292 million tonnes and Colombia with 2.109 million tonnes.
Regarding import markets in 2021, the EU was the largest importer of bananas with a volume of around 5.163 million tonnes. This is followed by the United States with a volume of approximately 4.062 million tons, then China with a volume of approximately 1.944 million tons, Russia with a volume of approximately 1.437 million tons and Japan with a volume of about 1.115 million tons.
