The project to install Bright Farms greenhouses on the roofs of supermarkets appears to be on track (photo: artist's interpretation).
An American company, Bright Farms, wants to transform the roofs of supermarkets to grow vegetables.
Bright Farms has contracted 10 supermarkets to build and operate hydroponic greenhouses on the rooftops. The supermarkets are committed to buy only products grown on the roof for 10 years.
According to Bright Farms, each greenhouse
will generate 1 to 1.5 million dollars in revenue a year, prevent 740 tonnes of CO2 per year, and use up to 9 times less water.
Hydroponic greenhouses produce more ecologically with transport completely avoided. A greenhouse demonstration will be installed at Whole Foods in New Jersey.
