Clingstone peaches to rise 4% this autumn
The projection for California almond production in 2024 indicates that 2.8 billion pounds will be harvested this fall, up 13% from last year. This increase is due to a year-on-year increase in yields, although almond acreage is unchanged. If this estimate is met, it would be the third largest almond crop in California's history.
As for peaches, the USDA's Fruit and Nut Outlook forecasts a crop of 510,000 tonnes, up 6% from 2023. Clingstone peaches will increase by 4% and freestone peaches by 8%. Most of the freestone peaches will go to the fresh market, while clingstone peaches will go to processing. Despite a warm winter, a good crop is anticipated thanks to abundant fruit set and favourable spring conditions.
Sweet cherries will face a 6% decrease in production, reaching 333,000 tonnes. Oregon will increase its production by 11%, but will not compensate for declines in Washington (-11%) and California (-2%). Washington, which accounts for 52% of national production, suffered frost damage in January, which will affect shipment volumes.
Apricot also presents challenges, with production estimated at 36,000 tonnes, just 1% more than last year. California's apricot production will be 34,000 tonnes, while Washington will see a 43% decrease.
Fresh grape production in California faces a reduction in acreage, estimated at 125,000 acres in 2023, down 2,000 acres from 2022. Despite this, fresh grape imports reached a record 1.75 billion pounds in marketing year 2023-24, exceeding domestic production volume for the first time.
