Red onions of Tropéa
Red onion of Tropéa, based in Calabria (South of Italy), obtained an IGP three years ago.
Mr Ruggiero, producer, explains that this certification caused many problems at the beginning.
Sales had fallen because selling in IGP requires the product to be packaged in the zone of production. And previously, a big part of the production was worked again outside the region by retailers.
The situation is now sharply improved: 160 000 quintals are certified on 240 000 products, what makes between 70 and 80 % of the production.
This onion, which begins to be known and estimated outside Italian borders, has for peculiarity its sweetness.
