In the first quarter of the year, Argentine pear shipments to Europe have experienced a remarkable growth of 32%, reaching a total of 26,270 tons, according to an Argentine media. This increase is due to the significant decrease in the European pear crop for the 2023/24 season, which has generated shortages on the shelves and an increase in consumer prices.
Despite a slightly smaller crop in the Rio Negro Valley compared to the previous season, the superior quality of the Argentine pear has facilitated its acceptance in northern markets. However, some fruit businessmen point out the difficulties in switching suppliers from one season to the next, as European importers have effectively managed their stocks of stored fruit to avoid supply problems.
Italy leads as the main destination for Argentine pears in Europe, followed by the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. These five markets account for more than 90% of the growth in Argentine exports to Europe in this period. Despite this increase, Europe's share of total Argentine pear exports remains low, increasing from 17% to 23% compared to the same period last year.
As for total exports of Argentine pears, data from the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA) indicate that they remain stable, reaching just over 115,380 tons in the first three months of the year. Brazil continues to be the main buyer, while the United States shows a decrease in its imports due to the lack of size in Argentina's exportable supply and the high stocks of pears in the country. On the other hand, Russia has reduced its purchases by 30%.
Although the international commercial season is still underway, and the volume of exports is not unfavorable, it will be necessary to wait to define the trend of the Argentine pear market globally.
