Mercabilbao has turned 40 and feels cramped in Basauri - a site fully occupied.
40 years after its creation, the wholesale market Mercabilbao is lacking space and would like a new location.
Mercabilbao opened the Basauri site in 1971. Since then, hundreds of businesses are located there and space is fully occupied. There is no more free space for new companies
to enter. Manager Aitor Argoete there should be a new area 3-4 times larger, bu there is currently no project.
In 40 years of activity, Mercabilbao sold nearly 9 million tons of food, of which 7.5 million tonnes were fruits and vegetables.
