The potatoes of Punjab will be exported for the first time to Russia and Iran.
Potatoes produced in the Indian state of Punjab will be exported for the first time to Russia and Iran.
The State Department of Agriculture and the PAIC (Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Limited) are developing export arrangements for these two new countries. The initial supply is of the order of 2 800 tonnes to Russia and 5 000 tonnes to Iran.
The volume of planned exports to Russia and Iran is small compared to the total production of the region where the area cultivated in potatoes covers 70 000 to 80 000 hectares.
Exports could start quickly. The supply of potatoes from the Pakistani province of Punjab for the current season will end on the 15th of March, the Indian province could then begin its shipments.
