Ivory Coast expects to reach 500,000 tonnes of bananas.
Ivory Coast, together with Cameroon, is one of the main African producers and exporters of bananas and the country plans to almost double its production (280 000 tonnes in 2016) in 2 years.
OBAMCI, the organization of the exporting producers, announced that Ivory Coast could increase its production considerably to reach 500 000 tonnes of bananas in 2 years.
The organization explained that the recent arrival of 2 companies, BANACI and SIAPA from the Caribbean archipelago, should result in an additional production of 200,000 tons. This new volume will be supplemented by the production of small farmers who have received EU financial support and are expected to start producing 20 to 25 000 tonnes by 2018.
With this expansion of production, the organization aims to stimulate regional trade (Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Mauritania, but also North Africa), planning to increase its exports from 20 to 25 000 tons / year to 70 000 tonnes / year. This expected development will also make it possible to better cope with competition from Latin American bananas on the European market.
