New Zealand Cherry Corp. grows cherries gifts for New Year season
“We grow, pack and ship the finest cherries from January to February.”
The company and its people are impressive: great motivation, 40 ha protected orchards and state-of-the-art packing house. The ambition is clear: supply the finest cherries in key period corresponding to the Chinese New Year.
Established in 2004 by two friends: Bob Robertson and Henry Van Der Velden, New Zealand Cherry Corp. benefits from a clear strategy and great investments. Plantation represents 40 ha of orchards, 100% are covered by netts that protects from birds, hail and wind. Based in Cromwell, Central Otago, in the Southern Lakes District of New Zealand. Orchards benefit from the purity of New Zealand’s clean water, air and environment.
40 ha fully protected
Cherry orchards are very special as 100% of 40 ha plantation are covered with special nets to protect them from birds, wind and hail. In 2017, orchards will also been protected from rain in order to ensure the best quality cherries.
Lately, a new design has been launched to focus on the Asian gift market with “Kiwi Delight” brand. A special gift box has also been adapted to offer cherries like you offer chocolate.
The “RED ENVY and CHERRY DELIGHT” visual identities have also been re-designed with pack in 1kg, 2 kg and 5 kg.
On top of that, the sophisticated grading and packing process ensures a minimum of fruit handling. Constant quality control from orchard to market ensures only premium cherries are selected for export.
Met in Hong-Kong, Mrs. Sharon Kirk, International Sales Manager points out:
“We believe that cool chain is the key to fruit arriving in to the market in premium condition and we strictly control the cool chain from the time the fruit is harvested until the time it arrives to the market. Once our fruit is harvested it arrives at the pack house within 1 hour. We do believe that the less you touch the fruit and the better the quality is. Therefore thanks to Compac vision technology grader, we touch as little as possible the fruit for safety and quality.”
“The whole pack house is at 12°C, to provide a cool environment to cherries. Cherries are in water kept at 2°C during the whole process of washing, grading and packaging. At the end, transport is also organized in temperature monitored truck and air containers.”
NEW ZEALAND CHERRY CORP. supplies key supermarket chains in New Zealand. The 500g or 800g pouch bag is often used.
As for exports, the main markets are in Asia, but company wants to develop its sales in Europe also. Currently they supply into Russia and are looking to expand.
Three new markets have been recently opened with Japan, USA and Indonesia in addition with existing countries: Singapore, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand, South Korea and Russia.
Mrs. Sharon Kirk adds:
“We begin to sit down with our existing customers and prospects in September to build up the program. We operate with pre-sales system as our demand is high and our orchards are protected. This is another difference in our operations.”
Our next step is to push up our brands to end-consumers!”
