After 4 years of slowing down and thanks to efforts to improve agricultural practices and packaging methods, exports of fresh produce from Bangladesh have increased by 31%.
For Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), fresh fruit and vegetable exports in fiscal year 2018-19 increased by 31% in one year to reach $105.39 million. The volume of exports totaled 46 476 tonnes of fruit and vegetables, a 15% increase over the previous year.
According to BFVAPEA (Bangladesh Fruit Vegetables & Allied Products Exporters' Association) this increase is due to the reopening of exports to Europe. Bangladesh now ships fresh produce packaged in accordance with the EU export guidelines.
In Europe, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and France are the main markets. The EU is the 2nd market for Bangladeshi fruits and vegetables behind the Middle East, due to the demand of Bangladeshi migrant workers (5 million) living there.
