Export will be permitted from the 16th of October for Satsumas grown in the Southeast region and from the 23rd of October for those grown in the Aegean region.
The season starts a dozen days later than in 2016.
According to studies carried out by the Egean Agronomic Research Institute, there will be a drop in production by 47%, resulting in a total of around 102 000 tonnes. The reason for this significant reduction in production is the cold during the flowering period, which prevented the formation of fruits. Production is better in the Mediterranean area and therefore export should not be unduly affected.
In 2016, 45 importing countries purchased Satsuma of Turkish origin, but Russia is by far the largest buyer with 60% of total imports. Ukraine is the second largest importing country, followed by Iraq.
