Spanish exports drop - 5.2% in Jan-March

Fruit and vegetable exports from Spain registered a reduction by 5.2% up to March of this year, totalling 2.98 million tons. Per value indicators were instead stable compared to the same period 2007, amounting 2,493 million euros.
In particular, exports of fruit decreased the most, registering a 19.24% drop in volume for a total of 1.2 million tons. However, they slightly improved per value registering a positive +1%, for 1,196 million euros. The most affecting factor was the reduction of citrus fruits, decreasing by 25% in volume and 6.3 in value. Exported volumes of other fruit actually rose remarkably , in particular strawberries (+23%), apples (+4%) or pears (+52%).
Exports of vegetables improved by 12% in volume (totalling 1.58 million tons) but decreased by 1% in value (for 1,297 million euros total). Tomatoes keep on being the most exported Spanish vegetable with 465,018 tons (+11%), followed by lettuce (+4%, 248,085 tons).
Average prices of exported fruit improved by 25%, while on the contrary those of vegetables dropped by 12%. Table grapes (-44%) and pears (-27%) got the most relevant negative results while other fruit such as kiwifruits (+43%), citrus fruits (+24%) and avocados (+20%) recovered.
Average prices of exported vegetables were lower compared to the same period 2007, except for zucchini (+13%), in particular for onions (-60%), lettuce (-20%), potatoes (-30%), tomatoes (-12%), peppers (-19%) and green beans (-14%).
