2008 crucial to citrus canker situation

Australia could become the first country in the world to eradicate citrus canker, if the Emerald area in central QLD remains clear of the bacterial infection for another year.
Five-hundred-thousand citrus trees were destroyed in the area when the disease was detected in May 2005 and re-planting only started three months ago.
The Dept. of Primary Industries says the real test will be to see whether the disease reappears in the new commercial citrus trees and will undertake a further intensive surveillance program over the next 18 months, with surveillance of orchards every 90 days to ensure the disease has been eradicated.
