To reduce its dependence on EU countries, the UK has increased its imports of fresh produce from Morocco. For January 2021, the volume of imports of Moroccan products to the United Kingdom increased by + 51% compared to January 2020.
The United Kingdom left the European Union on December 31, 2020. The country, very dependent on its imports of fresh produce from EU countries, has sought new suppliers. According to HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs) data, imports in January 2021 of Moroccan products to the United Kingdom increased by + 51% compared to January 2020.
Imports into the United Kingdom of Moroccan products increased from 20,236 tonnes in January 2020 to 30,648 tonnes in January 2021. Zucchini with + 822% ahead of strawberries with + 459% at the top of the increase.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports reached 474,000 tonnes in January 2021. Shipments to the United Kingdom accounted for 6.33% of Morocco's total exports in January.
