The Guardia Civil has arrested a 47-year-old man, resident in Tarragona, accused of multiple thefts after stealing almost 3 tonnes of artichokes in the Baix Maestrat region of Castellón.
Agents from the Vinaròs Roca Team caught the individual when he was trying to sell the stolen goods, carrying 110 kilograms of Green Queen artichokes.
A police investigation was launched to confirm the detainee's involvement in a series of further thefts in the province, which culminated in the theft of the almost 3 tonnes mentioned above. These actions resulted in economic losses estimated at more than 8,000 euros for farmers in the area.
The Guardia Civil recovered 110 kilograms mentioned above, along with another 20 units found in three establishments in Benicarló and Vinaròs. As a result, an investigation was also opened against the two managers of these businesses as alleged perpetrators of a crime of receiving, by introducing artichokes of illicit origin onto the market.
