Bad crop in South-East
France
Wednesday 30 January 2002
The temperature fall in December made freeze olives still on trees, notably the 'picholine', late variety. South-East of France is victim of frost, 3/4 of crops are affected in the Gard and Drôme areas. Nevertheless, some areas will use these olives to make oil. Next campaign may also be perturbed according to olive trees frost resistance. Further to frost, the salad crop is also compromised. Losses in the south-east of France are estimated at 80-90% for blond battavia lettuce in open field and 25-30% in cold glasshouses whereas they currently represent 60% of the salad production in the region.
