Last week, the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, reported via Twitter that the health diplomacy with the United States was achieved and now, paprika will have access to the US food distribution centers.
Paprika is the 99th fresh product that can enter this market, along with blueberries, aguaymanto, and hass avocado, among others.
José Manuel Restrepo, the Colombian Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, commented that along with this comes an opportunity to take more advantage of the Trade Agreement with the US, which has been in force since 2012, as their imports of paprika from other countries reach around $1.4 billion.
In 2020, Colombia exported paprika for $137.587, mainly to Panama, Aruba, and Curaçao.
Rodolfo Zea Navarro, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, pointed out that over the last 5 years, paprika exports have been increasing, amounting to $748.239 from 2016 to 2020.
With this new opportunity, they hope to start to cooperate closely with the private sector, so that it allows them to identify what they require from the national government and take advantage of this market in the short term. They seek to position the Colombian paprika in the US market just as they have achieved with avocado.
The main paprika producing areas in Colombia are the northern region of Valle del Cauca, Antioquia and various areas of the Caribbean region. The producers of Valle del Cauca area already have an access to certain export markets and are experienced in handling new technologies.
