The new SmartRipe system will allow fruit ripeners to monitor and control ethylene generators remotely using a smartphone or web browser.
Catalytic Generators has announced a wireless version of its SmartRipe system, designed to help fruit ripening facilities monitor and manage ethylene application remotely. The technology is expected to become available worldwide in early 2027.
SmartRipe connects the company's ethylene generators to a cloud-based platform that operators can access through a mobile app or web browser. The system provides real-time information on generator status, ethylene production rates and Ethy-Gen II reservoir levels.
Users can also adjust ethylene production remotely and receive notifications by app, text message or email if a generator stops working or its reservoir becomes empty.
Reducing manual checks
Ethylene is used to control the ripening of bananas, avocados and other fruits. Previously, operators using Catalytic Generators equipment had to visit ripening rooms to check generator status and confirm that the Ethy-Gen II reservoir had emptied as expected.
Greg Akins, President and CEO of Catalytic Generators, explained that the new system would allow operators to check ethylene application without entering individual ripening rooms, reducing uncertainty during the process.
SmartRipe can monitor multiple generators through one interface. It can also identify which ripening room each generator is operating in and automatically update its location when equipment is moved between rooms.
Wireless connection through insulated walls
The new version uses sub-GHz LoRa wireless technology, which is designed to transmit data through insulated walls and metal structures commonly found in cold storage and ripening facilities.
Earlier SmartRipe technology required wired connections, limiting its use in facilities without Ethernet access.
According to Akins, wireless connectivity has allowed the company to develop additional functions that make remote equipment management more practical for ripeners.
The system does not require an ethylene sensor to report generator operation and application status. However, it can be integrated with existing ripening room control systems. Where reliable ethylene sensors are installed, the integration can also support automatic adjustments to ethylene production rates.
Available for existing generators
SmartRipe will be compatible with Catalytic Generators' Easy-Ripe, Auto-Ripe and Centralized Ripening System (CRS), as well as its Citrus Ethylene Generator, used for citrus degreening.
The technology can also be retrofitted to older generators, although the company recommends newer equipment for full functionality.
Akins said the aim was to simplify ethylene management by giving operators remote access to generator information, controls and alerts while maintaining the company's existing approach to ethylene application.
